I also looked into fuel injection and hydraulic valve lifters, but ultimately decided against it. Neither of these were standard features for the type 2, and I didn’t want to experiment.

I called a couple of dozen places around the country. Eventually, I talked to Darry. He was a great reputation online, and a long history of good VW work. We decided on the 1776cc with dual carbs – a “premium turnkey” with a few slight changes. It took several weeks, but the engine was delivered to my restoration shop just as expected! Great running and looking block of steel! There were a couple of issues, including a missing tin and clutch. But Darryl was quick to make it right.

I would probably change a couple of things in hindsight, including maybe just the single carb and a quieter muffler. I still haven’t got the Kadron carbs jetting quite right and they are running a bit rich.

But I got the pulley anodized to match the paint, and it looks great!

UPDATE June 2019

Check out recent blog posts. Since the original engine install, I've made some changes. I put the old doghouse fan shroud back on. It had the spring load thermostat for the air flap and the new one did not. Also, I've removed the duel card in favor of a single, double barrel Weber Progressive. Lastly - I've added an external oil filter and oil cooler. OMG - make so much difference for highway driving! Oil temp never gets above 235 degrees!!

New Engine!

After the engine (mostly) died, I searched for a reputable and affordable replacement. I wanted a slightly larger displacement with more power. Really, my requirements were:

  • 1766cc or larger, dual port

    • Not too large so as to introduce constant overheating issues. This is an issue with the bus, as the aerodynamics are not good and it works really hard to get down the road. Since I would be doing a lot a highway driving I need a reliable configuration that would move me down the highway at 65 mph.

  • New case instead of rebuilt.

  • Maybe dual carbs

  • A shop that had a good reputation online. A mechanic that had a VW passion. And I didn’t want to be sold on exotic feature or configurations that add cost and future maintenance.

  • I want it to look good too!
